Some Good News

FBC Oakwood family and friends,

I would like to share some good news.  As our church family positions ourselves to be a Global Mission Resource Center we get to link arms together a have a tremendous impact.  Financial gifts were given recently to pay for the back-to-school project with 5 other south Hall churches to provide back packs and school supplies to families in Oakwood.  Gifts were made to begin the flooring project for a family an Oakwood.  A special gift was given for upgrading our building security with new doors.  A financial investment was made to provide for the music ministry through the rest of 2018.  And we are continuing to receive gifts for helping Victory Christian Fellowship church and school in Jamaica with roof repair.  And each week more than 10% of your tithes and offerings to the general budget directly fund missions and evangelism in Oakwood and around the world including Multiply Church in South Hall, Church planting in North America, International Missionaries, Good Samaritan food pantry, and on and on.  Last night 13 people met with Dwight and Sue Joy of RU4 missions to discuss s short term trip to carry water filters and the gospel to the people of Nepal in 2019.

All good news.

We are better together.  Team work makes the Dream Work.  Living out Jesus' Dream of the Kingdom.  Loving our neighbors and sharing the good news of God's love.

Global Mission Impact

Global Missions Opportunities to Invest

Do you want to have a global impact for Kingdom of God? I do too. I want my heart and treasure to go toward to the good news of the Kingdom both locally and globally.

How can we help do this together? Each week our tithes go into a general offering that operates the yearly budget of our church.  Everything we spend comes from the generosity of members and friends of our church who give generously.  This general operating fund is dispersed to fund the local and global mission of Jesus together.

In addition to this general fund, people often give to specific causes and opportunities to invest in special projects and purposes.  There are lots of these.  Here are few examples: youth camps, vacation Bible School, Nepal Mission trip, North American Mission Board church planting, music, etc.  The list goes on and on in the various ways we give to impact others with the Good News of Jesus.

Our general fund operates routine planned yearly expenses. Other opportunities come up that require special designated offerings that our outside of the general operating fund's ability to fund.  When these needs come up, people spread the word, and funds are received to accomplish the mission together.

There are some opportunities right now where you can invest in powerful opportunities to spread the love of Jesus locally and globally.  Here are just a few.  Some of these you may know about and others you may not have heard about.

·         Jamaica fund for Victory Christian Fellowship and School. The need is for repairs to the roof and playground equipment.  The church and school is in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We were going to send a team to do some of the repairs, but the decision was made to raise money instead of going due to the high travel expenses and scope of the project. Money may be designated: "Jamaica"

·         Back to School project for school supplies for children in South Hall. Partnering with 5 other Oakwood churches we plan to supply book bags and other supplies. Our offering goal for this project is $350. You may designate: "Backpacks or Back to School"

·         A need has come to attention for a family in our community with subfloors that need to be replaced which are falling and sagging.  We have people in our church who can supply the labor to do the job, but we are receiving an offering for building supplies.  You may designate: "Floor Mission Project"

·         We receive hygiene products, empty egg cartons, and empty plastic grocery bags for the Good Samaritan Food Pantry. These can be brought to the missions table in our sanctuary anytime.

·         A team is preparing to travel to Nepal in January of 2019 with RU4 ministries to deliver water filters and share the gospel. If you want to help with this team going you may designate: "Nepal"

This list goes on and on.  Different people feel inclines to give in different directions to different projects. We do birthday parties in local nursing homes for residents. We buy the small gifts for them and supply birthday cakes.  We help with benevolent needs that arise. Together we have projects such as wheel chair ramps, deck repair, and Louisiana mission projects of repairing flood damage.  Working together through planned impact and other opportunities that present themselves, your church is making a local and global impact.

You could say it this way: Our Church is global mission resource center.  Money passes through our hands to impact the world in Jesus name.  We give together. We serve together.  We go together. I can think of no better place to give my heart and treasure than through this local church. I'm excited about what all God is doing through our church.  We are better together. Team work makes the dream work.

Give away a coke (your drink of choice) and a smile.  This afternoon will be an especially good time to find people who are hot and could use a coke and smile from a kind person like you.

You can pick a high traffic intersection or dare to drive around and find people working outside or folks walking the street.

Have fun surprising people with kindness.

Day 24 of 40 Days of Kindness

Tell some good news day. Tell someone today how this 40 day challenge has impacted you.

What has been the biggest stretch for you?

What has blessed you?

Invite them to join you.

Be ready to answer the why question. Because Jesus loves us. And treating others how we would want to be treated is still the golden rule. And it can still change the world.

Day 22 of 40 Days of Kindness

There is someone close to you that you may forget to show your love and appreciation as often as your would like. You never mean to overlook them. You just assume they know how much you love them.

Today remove all doubt with a special gift or note.  Surprise them with something that has special meaning.  That favorite candy bar, drink, or collectible. Show them the kindness you have been showing to others during this 40 day challenge.

Day 21 of 40 Days of Kindness

Today is a day for sharing. Split something you have today in half and share with someone close. At work, you could split a drink from the vending machine. Split a hamburger. Go in with someone and split paying for a police officer's meal. Sharing can be fun. Share something with your spouse or your friend. Maybe you and your child.

Generosity grows when we learn to share. Sure we eat the whole sandwich but sharing bring us together with others.

5 hugs and/or high fives today. Preferably people you don't know. Surprise folks with kindness.  Look for someone that really needs one. Always ask first before a hug. You don't want a black eye.

Day 17 of 40 Days of Kindness

It is a another day to break out the pen and paper or better yet get one of those fancy Dayspring cards or Hallmark.

Write a politician and thank them for their service to our community.  Even if you think they are doing a sorry a job or belong to a different political party, he or she is doing their part to help out. There may be a host of reasons he or she in the politics, but it usually starts with a deep desire to help out in some way.  Write them an encouraging note thanking them for their service.  Pray for them and let them know you are here for them.

If you are so bold, invite them over to your home for coffee and cake.  They probably don't get many invitations that are not connected to some hidden agenda. They could use the kindness.

Day 16 of 40 Days of Kindness

Today is about showing kindness to specifically someone of another generation from yourself. Older or younger. Be creative with some of the ideas and projects you have already done.

How could you show kindness to a child, a middle aged adult, an older adult, a teenager, young adult, or elderly? Ask the Holy Spirit for direction and enjoy.

Day of 15 of 40 Days of Kindness

Day 15 is a day of necessary silence and careful word choices.  Today in your conversations put a kind guard over your mouth.  There will be moments when you are compelled to say some things that are unkind or at least unhelpful. To accomplish this today you will need the help of the Holy Spirit so ask. After every victory all day long stop and thank God for His help.

On the positive side, look for opportunities to say something kind and uplifting that you would not ordinarily say.  Give it a try.  You may discover how much of a difference it makes in others and you.

Day 14 of 40 Days of Kindness

Would you take time today to pray for and send an encouraging word to our church planting pastor, Robby Williams?  Robby is planting a church in South Hall.  I know that he and his family could use the encouragement and kindness we could share. Any gift that you can send that way would be great as well.

Day 12 of 40 days of Kindness

2 Options today:

Option 1: Preparation day for a coke give away tomorrow.  Buy a 24 pack or more of Coca-Cola cans or bottles (glass bottles would be fun).  Take a small cooler to ice these down tomorrow to hand out at a local intersection or somewhere else where you will see a lot of people in a short amount of time.  Do this in pairs or as family.  (kids and teens make it fun). Today is preparation day.  Make your plans. Chill the drinks overnight. Pick your spot and begin praying for the people you will encounter.

Tomorrow, simply hold the drink out,  When they roll down their window or stop you can just say, "You look like you could use a coke and smile.  God bless you today."

Option 2: Catch up day.  Is there an activity you have not done from days 1-11? If so go back today and do it.  If you have done 11 out of 11 then "catch up" with an old friend today with a phone call (not text). Set aside enough time really up.

Day 11 of 40 Days of Kindness

It is day 11. Take a look at the number 11.  It is two 1s standing side by side: 11.

Today's assignment is to be with someone.  Just be with them.  Listen to them. Visit with them.  Let them know that you are "with them."

In Jesus, God came to be with us, Emmanuel.. The best news in the world. God did not leave us alone. He came to us to be with us.  And He made a way for us to be with Him.

Who do you know who made need to know that he/she is not alone.  Go today and be with him/her.  Stand by him. Stand with him.

Day 10 of 40 Days of Kindness

Post-it note and a gift

Time to get creative.  Write a note of encouragement for someone to find.  Here are some possible examples for the note:

You are awesome!
God loves you!
When God made you he was showing off.
You are blessing to someone.
You were made to make an impact.

With this note (you can do more than one) leave a dollar bill or better yet a $2 bill.

Where can you leave it? Here are some ideas:

Public restroom mirror.
Gas pump
Inside a library book
On a the next cup at a gas station sleeve of cups

You can probably come up with other great places and messages to encourage someone.  Pray that God will use this word of hope and kindness to find just the right person who needs to receive it.

Day 9 of 40 Days of Kindness

Day 9 is a day to show some love to strangers.  When we see everyone as a neighbor, there really are no strangers.

It is hard to turn down a tootsie pop or blow pop sucker. Go by a store where you can purchase a pack of these. Find a place where lots of people come and go. Walmart, the mall, parking lot at a gas station. Offer a free sucker to passers by.  CAUTION: when encountering children always speak to the adult first and get permission.

When people ask you why you are doing this, have an answer ready. Something like, "God gives us grace freely, giving away suckers to my neighbors is the least I can do." Or "Everyone deserves something sweet in life. Life is hard but God is good."

Be ready for someone to ask more about God. You can tell your story of God's grace.

Have fun!

Day 8 of 40 Days of Kindness

Today is Decoration Day. A day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.

Take a walk through a cemetery today and observe the many military markers you see.  Thank God for these who gave their lives for love of country and the cause of freedom.

Also, there are many people you know who have lost loved ones in recent days. Perhaps today you could write a note of encouragement to them, send a text, or drop by for a visit.

Day 5 of 40 Days of Kindness

It is $5 Friday.

Put a $5 bill in your pocket today and be watching where God wants you to use it to bless someone.  If you don't have $5 to spare, then find that $2 bill you've been holding on to and use it.

Somewhere along your path today as you are praying and watching, you will know what to do with it.

I'm hearing great things about what people are experiencing already this week in the 40 day challenge. Feel free to share your experiences with others and invite others to do these with you.

Day 3 of 40 Days of Kindness

Time to break out a pen and paper.  Today's assignment is to write someone a letter about how you are thankful for him/her. This can be a parent, teacher, some other leader.  Anyone you have thought about expressing thankfulness to but have never actually done it.  Grad some paper, pen, envelope, and stamp.  Words of encouragement from someone who takes the time to hand write a letter means so much.  Take a few minutes to do this kindness for someone today.

Day 2 of 40 Days of Kindness

Assignment should you choose to accept is to go to a drive through for fast food, a drink, coffee, etc.  and tell the person at the pay window that you want to pay for the car/person behind you too.  Watch the surprise on their face and rejoice.  If they ask why you can say that this is how grace and mercy works.  Grace is a gift paid in full.  We must only accept it.  Just how God offers us grace.

Have fun with it.  I'm headed to Starbucks!

Day 1 of 40 Days of Kindness

Serve the Server and double tip (30%)

Adapted from a "Tactical Kindness" by Ken Glassmeyer

This is can be done along, as family, or a small group:

I donʼt know if you or your family or friends likes to eat out together but this is a perfect chance to still enjoy each otherʼs company and serve folks that could really use some unexpected kindness. Want to try something new?

Serve your server. I first happened onto this notion a few decades ago when I was dining out with a friend and noticed something disturbing. There was this woman waiting the tables and she did not seem to be having a good day. I stopped her and you could tell that she thought I was just going to be another hassle in this crappy day. I smiled and tried to give her some space. I even pulled out a chair at the table and told her to take a small rest break, telling her that she just looked like she needed to catch her breath. She declined, claiming her manager would kill her. I joked with her said that she could just act like we had a question about the menu. She didn't take us up on it, but just showing her a small amount of kindness and being a bit cordial seemed to lift her spirits. She did stop back at our table several times, especially when she had a difficult exchange with another customer. Each time we greeted her with a knowing smile and gave her some space to decompress. I made sure I tipped her generously. As we left the restaurant, I walked by Tammy's "difficult" table and noticed that the folks left a mere handful of change.  My friend saw me grit my teeth and stare at the nice little pile. Ever since then, I try to make it a point to DOUBLE TIP. That's right. Don't leave ten or 15 percent--have some gusto and try out 30%. Chances are your server is a student or single parent and they can use the money more than you need it. Cut down on your quantity of dining out exchanges so you can have quality encounters if that is what it takes. Showing kindness and generosity to your server is especially powerful if you are dining out with your Bible study group. Keep in mind that most restaurants automatically add a gratuity of 15% to a group table. Imagine the head tilt you get from the manager when you want to speak to him to change the bill, because the tip isnʼt high enough! If you spend time really getting to know your server as a group, the whole staff will get to know you and your band of friends. We often frequent the same restaurants and have built up a rapport with the servers. We now regularly pray for them, right in the middle of the restaurant. God seems to honor these prayers because we have become servants of the servers. It isnʼt unusual for employees to come to our table that arenʼt even assigned to it to ask for prayer because word got around that sometimes our praying actually works!

Have some fun on day one!

Step Up 2018

FBC Oakwood family,

2018 has the potential of being a "breakout" year where we see exponential growth throughout our church.  We have positioned ourselves to "flip inside-out." We desire to be a church for the unchurched.  We want to be aggressive in seeking those who do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ.  We have good news of grace to tell, and we have a community that needs good news.

In order to have a breakout year, it is going to take all of us stepping up to new levels of participation and excellence.  We want to make sure we do our best to make every newcomer feel at home in our church and keep returning to hear the message of God's love.  Here are some ways you can "step up" and help.

We are looking for a Sunday School and Life Groups (home groups) director.  This is someone who could provide resources, coordination, and communication for our teachers and leaders.

Would you like to host a Life Group?  We will supply you with teaching and discussion materials to host a group of friends or neighbors in your home, in our church building rooms, or a coffee shop.  The times and day of the week would be up to you and your group.  You could also lead a more traditional Sunday School group on Sunday mornings.

You could host a MeetUp. Is there something you enjoy doing that others may want to participate? Kayaking, walking, coupon clipping, watching movies, or eating out.   These could be occasional MeetUps or meet regularly.  These are a great way to make new friends and invite others who do not go to church.

We are looking for an organizer willing to give leadership to the resource room.  Do you enjoy keeping inventory? Do you like keeping things neat and accessible? Step up and help.  Your skills can make a huge difference.

We are organizing a children's ministry team to coordinate kids ministry to give direction to our kids Sunday School, kids worship, Wednesday night Olympians, kids music and arts, kids camps, and kid MeetUps. Your help on this team can help set direction and vision for developing the next generation.

Our WeeOnes (preschool) ministry needs a director who will coordinate the schedules and provide resources for our workers. Do you enjoy providing a safe and fun place for preschool age children as a service to parents? We need you to step up.

Our student ministry (6th – 12th grade) needs a ministry team of leaders who will assist the next student pastor in directing student Sunday school, disciple-making groups, student worship, meals, retreats, camps, and MeetUps.  Do you enjoy working with students? We need you to step up.

Turning inside-out and positioning ourselves for reaching our community with take an ever growing team of people joining forces.  Bus drivers, singers, instrumentalists, nursery workers, organizers, teachers, mentors, and greeters.

Everyone is needed. You too! 2018 can be a breakout year.  Will you Step up?

If you are ready to step, don't wait to be asked. Let us know. There are ample opportunities to get started today.

Blessings on this new year of opportunity,

Pastor Myles
